AECT Standard 5 (Research): Candidates explore, evaluate, synthesize, and apply methods of inquiry to enhance learning and improve performance (pp. 4, 6-7).

This focused reading list, with cover letter, is an optional graduate portfolio paper.  Modern authors and philosophers of old have battled the philosophical questions around whether knowledge itself or the ability to wield the knowledge is more important or elevated over the other. This reading list houses a compilation of authors, Langdon Winner, Cindy Xin, Andrew Feenberg, Richard Parry, Sean Morris, and Jesse Stommel, which present a healthy balance of technological critiques through an academic lens.

The reading list also offers technologists, instructional designers, and educators alike a look into pedagogical and andragogical perspectives around the uses of technology. As technologists we are often exposed to emerging technologies while they are being crafted and at times, we are the crafters. As instructional designers, we may be tasked with wielding emerging technologies for the purposes of creating new learning experiences. As we create these technologies, it is important to design with intent and plan for the unintended. For when we wield and develop learning technologies, we should strive to keep the balance in our technological approaches, be it andragogical or pedagogical.

The Research standards are met with Theoretical Foundations and Ethics. Theoretical Foundations are demonstrated in this reading list through the research of both past and present authors in the fields of education and technology.

Additional Comments:

This paper wades into the waters of deepfake technologies and reviews current popular trends of its uses. While peering into popular concerns around deepfakes, the paper also dives into current and possible solutions for some educational challenges with artificial intelligence deepfakes, synthetics, and other digital bot technologies. Education has adopted many technologies over the years, AI is no different. These technological tools are currently driving disruption in our society, but they are also lighting many new paths to more engaging and personalized learning experiences.

The Research standards are met with Theoretical Foundations. Theoretical Foundations are demonstrated in this paper through the research of both past and present authors of text and video in the fields of education and emerging technologies.
